Man vs. Machine - Tobi Kunst, Aleksandra Chargeshvili, Timo Bega, Jessica Kuhn
The Line Between Us
Man vs. Machine is a generative exhibition that explores the relationship between human creativity and artificial intelligence. At the center of the project is a unique setup: Tobi Kunst, a human artist known for his obsessive drawing practice, is paired with a custom-built drawing machine. This machine has been trained to imitate Tobi’s thoughts and style using artificial intelligence developed by artists Aleksandra Chargeshvili and Timo Bega, who act as its creators and operators.
The exhibition is fueled by public input. Visitors are invited to submit drawing prompts—assignments that both Tobi and the machine will interpret separately. Their responses in the form of drawings will be displayed side by side, slowly transforming the exhibition space into a growing visual dialogue between man and machine.
As the experiment unfolds, Man vs. Machine critically revisits and reimagines the romanticized 19th-century ideal of the artist as a vessel of unconscious genius—now set against an artificial mirror trying to replicate exactly that. As much as it is about the artist, it is equally so about the viewer. What can we learn about our own human systems of valuing art? The exhibition challenges our ideas of essence, originality, and what it means to appreciate the human in art.
